Cheney uses classical painting techniques he learned during his rigorous, beaux arts training.
He begins with a mid-value ground and creates an underpainting of white highlights. Then, working with one color at a time in complement pairs, he works over the entire canvas. A paint stroke on on side is answered on the other, as musicians in different sections of an orchestra answer melodies and notes to create a harmony.
The famous abstract expressionist, Philip Guston, taught Cheney the importance of powerful composition and active paint strokes.
Finally he scumbles and adds glazes to create a richness of color and depth.
